The challenge

Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited is a New Zealand multinational publicly traded dairy co-operative and is the world's largest exporter of dairy products. They are a leader in dairy science and innovation, owner of a significant portfolio of brands in Asia Pacific, and a partner to many of the world's leading food companies. Fonterra’s Global Markets business is a relatively new division aimed at tackling the co-op's global and domestic challenges. Pricing capability at Fonterra is decentralised, operating independently across various channels and markets globally. As such, there is an opportunity to transform into a best-in-class, centralised pricing organisation which will sit within the Global Markets commercial team, and execute the full promise of pricing for the business.

Emu adopted its Agile Search methodology for this critical search, utilising real-time feedback gained from 'multiple stand-ups' between the Emu Lead Partner, Head of Research, Fonterra’s Commercial Director and Head of Executive Talent to assist in guiding this Asia-Pacific mandate.

With a multi-channel offering to the market, key challenges in the search involved identifying executive talent who worked across both retail and commodity channels, also ensuring the successful individual had sufficient potential and runway to push on from this pivotal role after the successful transformation into other areas of the business.

After a competitive process, Fonterra selected Nicole Graham, GM of Pricing ANZ at BP. Nicole is a highly credentialled senior leader with a strong growth mindset and extensive cross-functional experience in leading teams across multiple ANZ functions, in addition tp the Pricing Excellence discipline.

Results

Emu were great in their prompt updates during the process, being clear on the role and providing feedback throughout. Their personalisation was second to none and made the process more targeted and reflective of what the needs of the organisation were, and how this aligned with my personal ambition.
